Oracle alternatives are set to remain popular for organisations looking to support Java ecosystems while controlling costs, Azul chief executive Scott Sellers has predicted.
In an interview with The Stack writer Ed Targett, Sellers explained that an ongoing Java licence squeeze is continuing to push organisations seeking to maintain their transformation strategies beyond Oracle itself.
“It’s really quite remarkable how consistent Java has been as basically the default language of choice for traditional business applications that are dealing with business logic, or decision making, or transaction throughput,” Sellers was reported as saying.
Targett said that the founders of Azul have “plugged away determinedly and with great focus” for 20 years on their suite of software for “all things Java” — including the likes of Azul Platform Prime, an OpenSDK platform formerly known as Zing, and Azul Platform Core, formerly branded Zulu.
Java underpinned “everything from massive data processing engines, to machine learning libraries, via mobile applications and cloud computing platforms”, making it near-ubiquitous in the enterprise, the reporter wrote.
OpenJDK is an open source distribution of the Java Development Kit that looks to benefit from several Oracle Java Licensing changes that have worked to raise the cost of Oracle Java to organisations — such as the requirement that organisations license all seats regardless of number of installs.
Early February saw Azul Java products released on AWS and Google Cloud marketplaces. Azul is also available via UK and Europe based channel partners.
George Gould, senior vice president for corporate development and partner alliances at Azul, said in the related announcement: “By working together with the hyperscalers and preferred channel partners, we’re providing our customers additional ways to procure our products and optimise their cloud spending.”
