Jumbo supermarkets go agile with SAP and Tricentis software testing

Second-largest Netherlands supermarket chain Jumbo has accelerated its Agile software development of enterprise SAP applications and regression testing with Tricentis test automation tools.

Hanno Koeslag, development team lead at Jumbo, said quality had improved as well as enabling the firm to meet its targeted timeframe for regression testing.

“Since the implementation of Tricentis Tosca, there is an increased focus on the quality of the deliverable, both during the sprint itself and during the Go Live phase,” Koeslag said in the Tricentis case study.

“We need to complete regression testing every release, which is two weeks. A single regression testing cycle used to require more than two weeks to complete.”

Working with SAP partner Superp, Jumbo was able to transition to Agile methodologies to assist software development and updates, incorporating faster and more frequent testing cycles while reducing error-prone manual testing.

“Testers were able to quickly pick up the model-based testing approach with the use of Tricentis’ online Academy training. After three months, tests were already being executed on both SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA, as well various in-house applications,” according to Tricentis.

Jumbo test specialists first set some criteria for test automation with a view to facilitating fast, accurate testing for each release across multiple technologies used by Jumbo in its 700 stores in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Tricentis Tosca test automation was chosen by Jumbo and implemented.

No-code automation was seen as suitable for existing testers within the Scrum teams, including an ability to automate multiple SAP and non-SAP applications for complex end-to-end testing, according to Tricentis.

Benefits included a huge reduction of efforts needed to complete in-house application testing, as well as an ability identify defects earlier in the development cycle.

Jumbo is migrating to a single S/4 HANA system over time, instead of its current highly customised instance of legacy ERP system SAP ECC at the centre of its larger operation in the Netherlands alongside a new instance of SAP S/4HANA for controlling operations in Belgium.

“In the meantime, both systems require frequent updating and testing, in parallel. Their Tosca tests run on both ECC and S/4HANA, making testing easier to maintain as the migration progresses,” Tricentis said.
