Unitrends unveils pocket-size backup and recovery appliances

All-in-one enterprise backup specialist Unitrends has whipped the covers off a small form-factor range of backup and data protection appliances, dubbed ION.

Joe Noonan, general manager of Unitrends, commented during the launch that the aim was to set a new standard, with enterprise-level protection for any budget.

“IT professionals face huge challenges when it comes to data protection,” Noonan noted in the official announcement.

“These challenges include ever-evolving cyberthreats and a growing number of IT requirements that are outpacing IT staff growth.”

The ION line of small tower cybersecurity appliances has been designed with premium NVMe solid state drives, enabling low-noise use in small offices without a server rack, including built-in recoverability testing software.

According to Unitrends, the devices are small enough to fit in a pocket, and users may not require an external host for disaster recovery (DR) testing, patch testing and the like.

“Both the ION and ION+ can be used with Unitrends Forever Cloud for offsite immutable storage and Unitrends Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) for hands-free failover to eliminate downtime,” the vendor added.

Unitrends also launched a cyber assurance programme to advise customers on threats. The programme includes Unitrends administrator certification, professional cybersecurity certification, ongoing training and events, onboarding help, quarterly technical account reviews and a best-practices library.

According to the vendor, data and down-time risks are increasing, with phishing attacks and internal cybersecurity incidents common problems for typical IT teams.
