Sunset approaches for JetBrains Upsource code review

Developer tools company JetBrains has confirmed end-of-life for its Upsource code review and project analytics software.

Elena Pishkova, writing for JetBrains, explained that licensing and renewals for Upsource and Upsource user packs ended this month, although technical support and critical security updates will roll out until 31 January 2023.

“After this, no further updates or technical support will be provided,” she said.

“Over the past decade, we’ve seen a gradual industry trend of moving away from standalone code review tools to those integrated with other areas of software development.”

JetBrains had tried to offer an Upsource integrated with its other teamware tools, but this was “limiting” — offering a less than pleasant user experience as well as an additional installation and maintenance burden for end users, she said.

“As such, we decided to focus our efforts around code review on JetBrains Space, our integrated solution for software projects built from the ground up,” Pishkova confirmed.

Existing Upsource customers have a perpetual license, allowing ongoing use of Upsource as well as upgrades to the most recent version covered under current subscriptions.

Those who purchased a Upsource license on or after 1 January 2020 are eligible for a Space discount equal to double the customer’s annual spend on Upsource since 2020, she added.

According to Pishkova, an on-premises version of Space is in early access, with full release likely in Q2.
