Remote connectivity practices need improvement, warns TeamViewer

Organisations are attempting to enable remote and hybrid working without fully securing their environments, according to remote connectivity software maker TeamViewer.

“This points towards vulnerabilities in security posture, and delays in resolving technical issues that negatively impact employee productivity in the short term,” the company reported.

One in ten IT decision makers in a related TeamViewer quiz told the vendor they are ‘somewhat lacking” confidence. A few said they were ‘extremely lacking’ in confidence — suggesting potential room for improvement, according to TeamViewer.

Most of the organisations surveyed — about eight in ten — relied on virtual private networking (VPN) software to secure remote connections.

“VPNs lack visibility, cause friction in the event of continuous use and bandwidth limitations, and often fall short in the hybrid working era. Still, organisations can be reluctant to move away from them, which is unsurprising given their widespread use and adoption,” the TeamViewer report said.

A few respondents were still working with applications and data locally, then transferring the data later on, according to TeamViewer.

More than six in ten however said their solution was single sign-on (SSO). About four in ten used virtual desktop environments, three in ten were working with collaboration suites and fewer than one in five digital workspaces.

“Features such as SSO, end-to-end encryption, conditional access, and event-logging are crucial to achieving modern remote connectivity without compromise,” the report said.

So far, fewer than three in ten confirmed adopting a zero trust cybersecurity strategy — despite the interest in the approach, it added.

The small survey canvassed just 125 IT decision makers. About one in four respondents said they were ‘extremely confident’ in their remote connectivity technologies; almost half of respondents stated they are ‘somewhat confident’.
