It’s easier to manage Tentacles in the Octopus Deploy 2023.1 release

Deployment automation software vendor Octopus Deploy has sped up Tentacle endpoint agent upgrade functionality to allow easier distribution across multiple server tasks.

Octopus said that slimmer Tentacle upgrade packages in the 2023.1 release are “up to five times smaller for each platform. Users also wouldn’t need to upgrade Tentacles as often, because they were now “only required if critical”.

“Tentacles are a critical part of many teams’ infrastructure configuration. However, their updates can take time and delay queued deployment tasks,” the company said in the release announcement.

“And when upgrades are necessary, your Tentacle upgrades will be faster.”

The company said the changes should help relieve infrastructure configuration and deployment bottlenecks.

Also in 2023.1, an “official” Helm chart has been introduced to simplify self-hosting of Kubernetes on the user cluster. The fully-supported Helm chart allows installation of a multi-node Octopus cluster so users can always be on the latest version, Octopus said.

The update follows January’s more extensive 2022.4 release and roadmap announcement which rolled up improvements to control feeds for audit log data, enabling connectivity to Splunk or Sumo Logic, and built-in branch protection support for Config as Code using the Octopus user interface.

“Built-in branch protection support helps you meet compliance needs and reduces risk of erroneous changes making it to production,” the company said in a related note.

In the January release, Octopus also unveiled Jira Service Management integration for Enterprise subscriptions, and Octopus CLI vNext to improve command-line interactions with Octopus Deploy.

The vendor describes Octopus Deploy as an automated deployment server for easing automated deployment of ASP.NET web applications, Java applications, NodeJS application and custom scripts to multiple environments.

It says its mission is to enable software to be deployed more easily to multi-cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments, making even complex deployments straightforward as well as auditable.

Octopus Deploy claims to offer the only deployment tool with built-in multi-tenancy support.
