Instructure-Google partnership to extend digital classroom concept

Google for Education has teamed up with learning management system provider Instructure to simplify integration and extend capabilities across e-learning and digitised classrooms.

Kevin Turco, vice president of product management at Instructure, said the tie-up meant working with Google to find a solution that makes the job of educators easier, while maintaining privacy and security for student data.

“This partnership with Google Classroom is an example of how Instructure’s Learning Platform empowers partners and institutions to innovate and integrate faster,” Turco said in the announcement.

Schools with Google Workspace for Education Plus in the USA, Europe and the UK can now integrate their student information system (SIS) and Google Classroom through Instructure’s Elevate Data Sync offering — helping automate and simplify online course setup.

Alisa Sommer, head of edtech partnerships at Google, said users in 15 countries will be able to sync rosters from their SIS to Classroom so classes can be automatically created and updated.

“Education data integration is a complex problem, so we wanted an enterprise-class partner with deep expertise and a cloud-based platform that supports multiple standards and integration methods,” Sommer said.

According to Instructure, the offering is standards-based and enables interoperability with secure sharing of student, staff and learning data. This means administrators with a subscription can add all the enrolled students ahead of day one and keep the class lists updated, potentially saving time.

They can also connect using OneRoster or CSV files, the company said.

The Instructure learning platform, including Canvas LMS, Canvas Studio for higher education, and Impact (formerly EyeSoft) for streamlining edtech adoption, has been adopted by around 30 million users worldwide, it said.
