BrowserStack adds iOS, Android app patching and device support

Cross-browser application developer BrowserStack has unveiled a slew of new features for developers in August — including enhanced Android & iOS app patching capabilities and support for more late-model mobile devices.

“Enterprise customers can now use the sensor instrumentation features such as biometric authentication or camera image injection without any webpage errors or other issues,” according to BrowserStack release notes for August 2022.

When it comes to Android app patching, App Live means customers can use sensor instrumentation features, such as biometric authentication, etc. without getting their app re-signed by Browserstack.

A comparable app patching facility has been added for iOS users, following the announcement of iOS settings availability on App Live earlier in the month, as well.

“Using the iOS App patching feature, you can convert the original app to an instrumented app and use the sensor instrumentation features,” according to the developer.

“In this process, you use a BrowserStack endpoint where you can upload an unsigned original app and receive the instrumented app as the response.”

According to BrowserStack, this should help prevent authentication or invalid certificate problems and even crashes when testing happens on Browserstack devices.

However, the app patching feature is at press-time only available to Enterprise customers, the vendor said.

In other release news, BrowserStack has just added support for Android 13 on Google Pixel 6 pro, and for Motorola Moto G71 5G devices running Android 11.

Also, Windows has been introduced on SpeedLab and users can carry out performance testing on Windows 10 and 11 using Chrome, Edge and Firefox browsers.

Cross-site tracking has been enabled on iOS Safari as an option. Additionally, BrowserStack Automate now supports all new features introduced by Cypress 10.
