BrowserStack acquires Nightwatch.js testing toolset

Cross-platform browser testing software provider BrowserStack has acquired open-source test automation framework company Nightwatch.js.

Nakul Aggarwal, co-founder and CTO of BrowserStack, said the acquisition represents another step in the internet testing infrastructure market, through the promotion of simplified test automation and “open and inclusive” development.

“When open source wins, everyone wins. Many of BrowserStack’s own products are built on open-source technologies, and we know first-hand their power to bring significant change,” Aggarwal claimed.

Nightwatch.js is a Node.js, Selenium based end-to-end test automation framework, originally launched in 2014. Nightwatch 2.0, currently in beta, is expected to add support for Chrome Dev Tools Protocol, file uploads, and new APIs.

Andrei Rusu, creator of Nightwatch.js, said the acquisition would resource Nightwatch.js developments for the future.

“Our focus will be to proactively engage with the community for feedback and roll out updates to improve the core experience for developers,” Rusu said in BrowserStack’s deal announcement.

Nightwatch.js, which uses the W3C WebDriver API to drive browsers and perform commands and assertions on DOM elements, joins the BrowserStack family of open-source collaborations.

Through its open source programme, BrowserStack has backed some 2,400 open-source projects, the company said.

BrowserStack offerings include BrowserStack for Enterprise, which aims to help developers in corporate environments ship quality releases using Agile methodologies with continuous, secure testing at scale on multiple browsers and devices.
