ShareGate: Companies increasingly migrate to Microsoft 365

A survey by ShareGate – the maker of Apricot – suggests that more companies could be migrating to Microsoft 365 in a bid to modernise their cloud environments.

ShareGate notes that this confirms that the events of 2020 required organisations to adapt quickly as employees everywhere opted for virtual collaboration and distributed work.

“The cloud computing market has always evolved quickly,” according to the vendor. “It has been a year of digital resilience — and Microsoft cloud technology has played a critical role.”

ShareGate’s first annual State of Microsoft 365 report drew on data-based insights, industry surveys, and interviews with Microsoft executives to identify the trends of the year.

“Operations to migrate from on-premises to the cloud increased by 37% among ShareGate Desktop users in 2020,” according to the vendor.

“At the same time, cloud-based migration operations jumped by 50%, while on-premises operations decreased by 61%.”

Organisations had been looking towards digital transformation projects in 2020, but transitions were accelerated as a result of pressures from the Covid-19 pandemic.

More than half of the organisations in the report indicated they had completed a SharePoint or Microsoft 365 migration in 2020, with 84% having accelerated their plans.

Deployment of Microsoft Teams was a top motivator for around 43% of the firms surveyed.

Self-service features that assist with managing Teams were also popular.

“Among ShareGate Apricot users, group creation rose by 22% in a six-month period, and the proportion of entrusted groups (a self-serve feature in the app) increased 68%,” according the vendor.
