OpenText deployed to help manage flight operations at Eurowings

When Lufthansa budget airline Eurowings wanted to replace the remote access software that helps manage flight planning and operations, it turned to OpenText.

According to the vendor, Eurowings’s OpenText Exceed TurboX application has enabled secure access for staff employed to manage critical applications yet working remotely — helping keep systems running during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Andreas Buxot, a flight operation application expert at Eurowings, said the software had proven stable and secure during the year thus far, improving connectivity for a graphics-heavy Unix-based flight planning application.

“OpenText Exceed TurboX makes it quick and easy to manage flight operations, even with real-time changes like crew scheduling, weather disruptions and aircraft availability,” Buxot said in the official announcement.

Exceed TurboX, running on a centralised server, can support Unix, Linux or Windows applications from various locations or end points, running on a centralised server.

Uwe Kohlmetz, head of flight operations IT at Eurowings, said its Netline user access software had been difficult to administer and secure as well as only allowing a restricted number of remote sessions at a time.

“This made it harder for them to undertake concurrent tasks efficiently, impacting their ability to react to live

situations as they happen. NetLine is one of the most important systems in our business and it’s a big problem if there are any issues, including around performance,” he said.

Martin Stenzel, manager of the flight operations application, added: “In the past we had to use multiple tools and applications for remote access to key software applications like NetLine.”

In other news, OpenText has teamed up with Google Cloud to offer digital content platform software extensions for SAP to Asia-Pacific customers, including Japan. Support via Google Cloud will be available for SAP S/4HANA, SAP, SuccessFactors and SAP Customer Experience.
