Revenue at JetBrains up 11% in 2020 on back of Asia surge

Developer tools company JetBrains has announced 11% expansion in revenue for the 2020 year, powered by an 85% increase in Chinese sales.

During the year, China became JetBrains’ fourth largest market by sales volume, the company reported in its annual summary.

“Asia Pacific remains the fastest growing region with a 32% increase,” it confirmed.

Across EMEA, the firm reported growth of 12% for the 2020 year — compared to 3.4% for North, South and Central America.

The company says around 10.1 million developers worldwide now use its 30 or so different tools, up from 3.7 million in 2016.

Robert Demmer, blogging for JetBrains, said that 2020 marked the company’s 20th year of operation.

“JetBrains has grown from a small startup in Prague into an established international software development tools company with 1,500 team members across nine offices.

“Founded on a single product, our portfolio now boasts 30 tools with more than 6,000 plugins available to extend them further,” he wrote.

“We’ve accomplished all of this without external funding.”

Demmer said the Rider, GoLand, DataGrip, CLion, and PyCharm tools grew most in 2020, and JetBrains’ IDE for Java, IntelliJ IDEA, was used by around four million developers.

“We also officially released Space, our all-in-one collaboration platform for creative teams that covers all business processes, from chats and PM tools to the entire software development pipeline,” he wrote.

“Additionally, Code With Me, a new service from JetBrains for collaborative development and pair programming, started its early-access programme.”

Demmer also pointed to open source as a growth area: Kotlin 1.4 was released and the company also announced Ktor, a Kotlin framework for building asynchronous servers and clients in connected systems.

“The increasing popularity, with a huge number of Kotlin users, continues to amaze us – 5.8 million people edited code written in Kotlin last year,” Demmer said.
