Welsh council keeps critical services up and running with PRTG

When Cyngor Gwynedd Council sought to maximise service availability and reliability, it turned to Paessler’s flagship tool, PRTG Network Monitor.

Steven Whitten, network engineer at Cyngor Gwynedd Council, said the council supplies and manages multiple public services — which means it needs a robust IT network to ensure its 7,000 staff can do their jobs all day, every day.

“For sites where 100% uptime is essential to the effective and safe running of our services, having a monitoring solution we can truly trust is a blessing. PRTG is a tool we depend upon daily,” Whitten said, in this Paessler case study.

Cyngor Gwynedd Council is responsible for all local Gwynedd services around the clock, including education, social work, environmental protection, and many highways. For staff to perform well, they need regular updates via a high-availability computer network. Continuous network monitoring means stakeholders can receive ongoing data on network performance, including the IT teams that keep the computers running, heading off downtime and network issues.

The council trialled Paessler PRTG Network Monitor successfully. As of Q1 2020, Gwynedd Council uses over 10,000 PRTG sensors to help remote IT teams optimise network performance and remediate server and hardware issues, fixing problems as they arise.

“By working with Paessler, we have achieved one of our main goals which was to use PRTG to help save tax payers’ money as the solution is offered to us at an attractive price and performance ratio,” confirms Whitten.

Server monitoring is built into the PRTG platform and teams are warned of low server ‘health’ and memory issues. PRTG can also detect switches experiencing unusual traffic and better monitor systems such as finance and payroll that are hosted on Linux servers. The council also benefits from improved capacity planning and sysadmin time management.

Paessler in its July updates made a slew of improvements, tweaks and fixes, including to security, in versions 20.3.61 and 20.3.60. This follows June enhancements to monitoring of IoT systems to benefit remote working and distributed teams, connecting to enterprise networks via diverse endpoints.
