Raising the bar for BaseLanguage with JetBrains

JetBrains is mulling an upcoming feature for 2020 and wants the opinions of developers, partners and other potential customers.

Vaclav Pech, blogging for JetBrains, said “one of the more visible changes” the firm is preparing for 2020.1 is a set of enhancements to BaseLanguage inspired by Java.

“We would like to know your opinion,” Pech wrote.

Proposed enhancements include “try” with resources, the ability to catch multiple exceptions, string switch that’s natively supported in the generated code, and local variable type inference, he said.

“To support these features, the minimal source code language level for the generated Java code in MPS will be raised to Java 7,” he said.

“We believe that after so many years of Java 6 being deprecated this will hardly cause trouble to the MPS-based projects out there. Let us know if it could be an issue for your project and we will try to come up with a solution.”
