Oracle Java alternative Azul has announced a new feature of its Azul Intelligence Cloud offering set to further simplify and speed up Java migrations.
Because enterprise Java estates often contain tens of thousands of Oracle Java Virtual Machines (JVMs), it can be hard to identify and detail them when migrating.
Therefore the new feature, JVM Inventory, works to improve runtime and instance visibility, the vendor said.
Scott Sellers, CEO and co-founder of Azul, said that JVM Inventory paired with the Azul Migration Toolkit would deliver full visibility and runtime data intelligence that organisations could act on.
“We’re simplifying Oracle Java migrations. We’re also helping organisations control their Java subscription costs, reduce audit risk and ensure long-term compliance,” Sellers said.
Accordingly, Azul said its customer insights indicate that an unaided average Oracle Java migration takes six to nine months on average.
This is largely due to the “fragmented and manual process” of discovering and classifying JVMs using traditional software asset management (SAM) tools, the vendor said.
“These tools often lack runtime context, making it difficult to determine which Oracle JVMs are truly being used, which are bundled with other products under a permitted license, and which are installed but not used.”
How Oracle Java migrations can benefit
Consequently, users often suffered delays, errors and increased risk of non-compliance – in addition to unnecessary licensing costs. JVM Inventory could “dramatically accelerate” classification, migration and tracking of Oracle Java instances, Azul said.
“Leveraging this insight, organisations can slash months off OpenJDK migration timelines and help ensure ongoing Oracle Java licensing compliance and audit defences,” the vendor said.
According to Azul in its 2025 State of Java Survey & Report, 82% of survey respondents had concerns about Oracle’s Java SE pricing and licensing.
Also, 88% considered moving to an OpenJDK alternative, Azul said, suggesting a huge channel partner opportunity.
Additionally, Azul said Oracle’s rising per-employee subscription pricing had more than doubled the total cost of ownership for many organisations.
The Azul Migration Toolkit is a scanner that discovers JDKs in an enterprise environment. However, JVM Inventory will also work with other SAM tools, the vendor said.
